School District Information
Your local public school district is one of the best sources of information on what languages are being spoken in your area.
California has published a census of "Number of Fluent-English-Proficient Students in California Public Schools, by Language".
The Spring 1998 census lists a total of 720,479 students from 59+ heritage languages. The most common languages are:
- 448,560 Spanish
- 38,767 Pilipinio/Tagolog
- 33,051 Vietnamese
- 26,443 Cantonese
- 25,675 Korean
- 21,064 Mandarin
- 11,844 Farsi/ Persian
- 10,823 Khmer/ Cambodian
- 9,018 Armenian
- 6,721 Arabic
- 6,614 Hmong
- 5,731 Russian
- 4,713 Hindi

The Council of the Great City Schools has collected census data for the largest public school districts in the country, including Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland Unified, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco.
