Turkish Publications About Jesus

If you'd like to study the Bible, Wycliffe Associates has published a series of Easy English Bible Commentaries for pastors, elders and Bible Study leaders in the developing world. Easy English has two levels: Level A has a vocabulary of 1200 words. Level B has a vocabulary of 2800 words.

Background Info on the Turkish People

The SIL Ethnologue reports that 59 million people worldwide speak Turkish, making it number 19 on their list of Top 100 World Languages by Population. The largest Turkish-speaking populations live in Turkey, Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Yugoslavia.

SIL also reports that 61 million people live in Turkey. Ninety percent of the population speak Turkish, the official language, but Arabic, Farsi, Kurmanji, Azerbaijani, Kabardian, Adyghe and other languages are also spoken.

According to the World Factbook, Turkey is 80% Turkish and 20% Kurdish. Religious affiliation is 99.8% Muslim (mostly Sunni), and less than .2% Christians and Jews.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that over 42,000 people living in the U.S. spoke Turkish in 1990, making it number 42 on the Top 50 Languages Spoken in the U.S.

Information for Churches

Perhaps you've noticed that several Turkish families have moved into your community. Your church would like to get acquainted with them and find ways to serve your new neighbors. But how can you begin?

Begin your preparation by cultivating a loving heart, a listening ear, and the habit of prayer. Look for opportunities to learn about other cultures and develop skills for cross-cultural communication. There are lots of resources on this site, including the article "How to Start a Cross-Cultural Ministry," that can help you prepare to move forward in faith.

The Jesus Film is a great way to share the gospel in the "heart language" of your Turkish neighbors. Campus Crusade for Christ has produced this beautiful film of the gospel of Luke and translated it into over 600 languages, including Turkish. Your church can buy a video for less than $20 and sponsor a "Turkish Night" to show the film and begin a dialogue. Ask Turkish leaders in the community if they would like to see the film and if they'll help you invite other families.

The International School of Ministry offers affordable bible training in Turkish. Their course in structured, taught by interdenominational Christian leaders, and available on audio tapes so your church can become a training center.
